CTA applauds western provinces’ movement on Mandatory Entry Level Training
CTA: The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and its member associations continue to work with governments across Canada to raise the bar for truck driver training by introducing Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) for truck drivers. As the Humboldt tragedy brought nation-wide attention to the issue of commercial driver training, the governments in Western Canada have now joined Ontario in taking leadership along with their partner provincial trucking associations.
CTA: No reason for US to scrutinize truckers at border post-legalization of cannabis
CTA representatives appeared two weeks ago before the Committee on National Security and Defense on Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act, to discuss the potential impacts legalizations will have on the Canada-US border.
Seven AMTA Carriers named to Top Fleet Employers Program

Hiway Refrigeration Ltd. of Port Coquitlam British Columbia, announced April 13 it had reached an agreement to acquire Eskimo Refrigeration Ltd. – an AMTA member since 1971 – headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.
Transport Canada outlines to CTA policy path on impairment
CTA: Legalization of marijuana and its impact on the operation of commercial vehicles remains the focus of many national business and trade associations including the Canadian Trucking Alliance, the Railway Association of Canada and the Canadian Urban Transit Association. The three national associations have been jointly raising concerns about the impact of this legislation on their members.
CVSA: Drivers operating a CMV without an ELD will be placed out of service
CVSA – Greenbelt, Maryland (April 1, 2018) – Starting today, April 1, 2018, property-carrying commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers operating their vehicle without a required registered electronic logging device (ELD) or a grandfathered automatic on-board recording device (AOBRD) will be placed out of service for 10 hours; passenger-carrying CMV drivers will be placed out of service for 8 hours.

AMTA announces new President
Chris Nash has been appointed the role of President of the Alberta Motor Transport Association effective March 5, 2018.
Chris has more than 30 years’ experience in the transportation industry and is key to a number of committees and initiatives. Chris joined the AMTA Board of Directors in 2016 as the Edmonton Regional Director, and was nominated and elected as Vice-Chairman of the Board in April 2017. He sits on many other committees, and is also a board member with the Canadian Trucking Alliance.

CTA recently submitted comments to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on the regulatory framework of the upcoming federal Clean Fuel Standard regulation.
CTA addresses Trucking Harmonization Issues in Submission to Council of Transport Ministers
CTA: In September 2016 the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety agreed to establish a new Federal/Provincial/Territorial taskforce to identify areas that would benefit from increased harmonization in the trucking sector.

ELD mandate goes into effect; inspectors begin documenting ELD violations
Greenbelt, Maryland (Dec. 18, 2017) – Starting today, Dec. 18, 2017, in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) congressionally mandated electronic logging device (ELD) compliance deadline, inspectors and roadside enforcement personnel throughout the United States will begin documenting ELD violations on roadside inspection reports and, at the jurisdiction’s discretion, may issue citations to commercial motor vehicle drivers operating vehicles without a compliant ELD.

Alberta plated vehicles won’t be allowed on Saskatchewan highway job sites
Government of Saskatchewan: The Government of Saskatchewan announced [Dec. 6] that vehicles displaying Alberta licence plates will no longer be allowed on job sites for Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure’s new projects.

CVSA releases results from Brake Safety Day
Greenbelt, Maryland (Nov. 7, 2017) – On Sept. 7, 2017, enforcement personnel throughout Canada and the United States conducted 7,698 inspections on commercial motor vehicles as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Day. Fourteen percent of the vehicles inspected were placed out of service specifically for brake-related violations.
