Training Policies

The information on this page is intended to inform and guide students on AMTA’s training policies and practices, and to explore shared expectations for the learning environment we intend to create.

All requests for equivalency must be accompanied by a certificate of completion, and in some cases, a transcript may also be required. While we aim to advise as quickly as possible, we appreciate your acknowledgement and patience for a maximum equivalency review time of up to 10 business days.

Equivalency for the purpose of an AMTA designation (CTSC or CTSP):

  • Training courses successfully completed within the past five (5) years may be requested for equivalency. There is one exception to this:
    • HSSB training must have been successfully completed within the past three (3) years
  • HSSB equivalencies issued for the purpose of an AMTA designation will be valid for three (3) years from the date the equivalency is granted/issued
    • When issued for the purpose of a designation, an HSSB equivalency is not transferrable thereafter, as a prerequisite toward the completion of an AMTA auditing course. Instead, a separate equivalency for the purpose of COR will need to be requested. See ‘For the purpose of an AMTA auditing course’, below
  • A maximum of six (6) equivalency requests are permitted towards completion of the CTSC. The CTSC program application form contains a designated section where course equivalencies may be requested
  • A maximum of eight (8) equivalency requests are permitted towards completion of the CTSP. The CTSP program application form contains a designated section where course equivalencies may be requested
  • Associated cost: 100.00 +GST (one-time fee, non-refundable)

Equivalency for the purpose of an AMTA auditing course:

  • AMTA does not grant equivalency for its Internal COR Auditor (five-day) training
  • Health & Safety System Building (HSSB) is a prerequisite course to AMTA’s auditing courses:
    • If the training was taken through another Alberta Certifying Partner (CP) within the past five (5) years, an equivalency will be issued and remain valid for five (5) years
    • If the training was taken through any other training provider within the past three (3) years, upon review and approval, equivalency will be issued and remain valid for three (3) years

AMTA’s HSSB training does not expire. Unless successful completion of AMTA’s HSSB training is achieved, auditors with HSSB equivalency will be required to renew their HSSB training at either five (5) or three (3) years, dependent on the training provider (see above) and subsequently, will need to request another AMTA-issued HSSB equivalency.

  • Equivalency requests for the purpose of taking an AMTA auditing course can be directed to [email protected]
  • Associated cost: 100.00 +GST (one-time fee, non-refundable)

Certified Transportation Safety Coordinator (CTSC) & Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP) designation GKE’s permit:

  • A total of three (3) attempts to successfully pass the exam
  • Following two (2) unsuccessful attempts, participants are offered the opportunity to re-take AMTA’s online, self-paced HSSB course, at no cost
  • Following three (3) unsuccessful attempts, participants are required to wait one (1) full year before writing the exam again
    • If, at the end of the one-year waiting period the participant is still within the required, three-year designation completion cycle, they can write the exam without further requirement
    • If, at the end of the one-year waiting period the participant is no longer within the required, three-year designation completion cycle, they will be required to re-take Health and Safety System Building (HSSB), NSC Program Administration (NSCP-A), and Fundamentals of Investigation (FOI) before writing the exam again

Training records are housed in AMTA’s Learning Management System (LMS), BIS Safety Software. The record validation feature in the BIS Safety app enables a user to allow their training record(s) to be digitally validated by any individual with the BIS Safety app and a user account. To view training records, the person looking to confirm training records will scan the QR code on the user’s digital ID Badge.

TO UTILIZE DIGITAL RECORD VALIDATION:

  • Ensure both user and validator have a BIS Safety user account, and that the account is activated
  • Ensure both user and validator have downloaded the BIS Safety app:
  • Once logged into the app, in the top, right-hand corner there are two icons
  • The first icon ( ) is for the validator to use. The second icon ( ) is the user’s digital ID badge
  • The user will open their ID badge, which will display a QR code at the bottom
    • The user’s ID badge (and QR code) can be downloaded from their BIS account as a PDF which can be provided via email to the validator (where an in-person exchange is not an option)
  • At the same time, the validator will open the validation icon, enable the BIS Safety app to access their camera, and scan the QR code displayed on the user’s device
  • Once the validator has scanned the QR code of the user’s device, they will see a tab titled ‘Completed’. Click this tab to view the training history for the individual. All training history (both successful and unsuccessful attempts), scores and completion dates will be visible to the validator, and certificates for successful course completions will be available for their download

Watch a video tutorial on how to use record validation.

If you are experiencing technical challenges with the BIS Safety app, please reach out to [email protected]. For general inquiries, please reach out to [email protected]

**Effective September 28, 2026, the following requirement will be implemented:

It's important for students to participate and engage in the classroom, especially when training is online – this includes being punctual, participating in discussions and activities, and completing exams and course evaluations. AMTA, its instructors, and your fellow classmates appreciate the engagement and commitment of every student to the learning environment, prioritizing both their safety and active participation.

To validate the participating attendee and promote comprehension of essential safety principles presented during AMTA courses, students are required to keep their web cameras ‘on’ throughout online, instructor-led training sessions.

For students attending online, from home, we understand there may be privacy concerns for home environments and those who may share them. For this reason:

  • Our instructors can guide students on how to set up a Microsoft Teams background for enhanced privacy, and,
  • During break times and when extenuating circumstances require, web cameras may be turned off

Periods of 30 minutes or longer with web cameras turned off may impact training efficacy. For this reason, AMTA reserves the right to take necessary actions up to and including denial of a student’s certification and removal from the course without refund. If you have any concerns or questions related to this requirement, please contact us at [email protected].

Every instructor-led course at AMTA requires the student to be prepared with the following:

  • Laptop with speakers/microphone
Note: BIS courses and exams interact best with Windows PC. iOS devices will work but might encounter technical challenges. Tablets (all brands) have not been tested and may not be compatible
  • Webcam (for all online courses)
  • Working internet browser
Note: BIS courses and exams interact best when using a Google Chrome browser verses Microsoft Edge or Safari browsers
  • Wi-Fi or direct ethernet cable internet
  • Internet connection will need to support a minimum of 50-100 mbps. download speed and 15-25 mbps. upload speed

If you are registered for a course and have any questions or concerns related to your technology, we appreciate your advanced communication ahead of the course start date. Please reach out to us at [email protected].

While we recognize the convenience of AI tools and notetakers, active participation and engagement in a course is the most practical way to ensure the course’s efficacy for a participant. AMTA course content and materials are the intellectual property of the Association, and as such, the use of AI tools and notetakers is strictly prohibited during any AMTA course. AMTA reserves the right to remove participants from a course without refund, should this requirement not be honoured.
