I want to discuss a topic that is important to me and, for some, somewhat controversial: disputing safety violations. This article is intended to be general in subject and tone, so first I will define how I will be using the following three terms in this article:

Column Corner: Ongoing Driver Training
In the trucking industry, there is a requirement in the province of Alberta for trucking and bus companies to provide commercial drivers with training upon hiring (AR314/2002, the Commercial Vehicle Certificate and Insurance Regulation). Companies can consult Commercial Vehicle Safety Compliance in Alberta (also known as the AB Education Manual), which is a publication by the Government of Alberta which is freely available online through their website.

Release: Canada’s First Automated Commercial Trucks to Roll Onto Alberta Highways
Canada’s commercial trucking industry is shifting into a future that is being driven by safety, efficiency, and artificial intelligence. A test project funded by the Government of Canada will soon see a series of semi-trucks kitted with AI technology plying their trade on Alberta’s Queen Elizabeth Highway II – the major transportation corridor between Edmonton and Calgary.

Alberta Government release – April 27, 2021 – PIC [Partners in Compliance] is a voluntary commercial truck safety program that promotes safety excellence for commercial truckers and reduces red tape. It recognizes members who demonstrate a strong safety culture and operational excellence in commercial transportation in Alberta. PIC members can receive reduced administrative fees and bypass privileges at most provincial commercial vehicle inspection stations.

Phase four of construction has commenced at Kicking Horse Canyon, located just east of Golden, BC on the Trans-Canada Highway.
The corridor sees more than 10,000 vehicles daily in the summer months, and in a year averages as much as 30 per cent commercial traffic.
Keeping an Eye Out for Each Other
As I completed my research for a safety moment that I completed earlier in March, I found it to be quite concerning how catastrophic the impacts of fatigue really could be. Now, the safety moment I provided lightly discussed the various symptoms of fatigue – as there are many – as I wanted to focus on the impacts of one symptom in particular, which at times, I believe, can be overlooked.
OHS Code review 2020-23
Over the next three years, the Alberta Government is reviewing the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code. The Province says the review is an opportunity to improve health and safety outcomes for workers and streamline requirements to reduce unnecessary administrative burden.
Federal carbon prices increase April 1
Starting April 1, the federal carbon price on diesel will increase $0.1073 per litre.
In a release from the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), the alliance estimates the commercial transportation industry will pay $538 million in carbon pricing in 2021. By 2030, CTA estimates $3 billion in carbon pricing by 2030.

AMTA allies with #NotInMyCity to help disrupt and end human trafficking
Not only do commercial drivers keep goods on the move, they also constantly have their eyes and ears on Alberta’s roadways
Those drivers now have the opportunity to do even more as the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) is collaborating with #NotInMyCity to help educate its more than 15,000 members on the issue of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
Column: Four Thoughts About Asking for Help
Knowing when and how to ask for help is a valuable life skill. No one can do everything completely on their own, and if they try they are likely to see worse results than if they had asked for help when it was needed.
