Federal carbon prices increase April 1

Starting April 1, the federal carbon price on diesel will increase $0.1073 per litre.

In a release from the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), the alliance estimates the commercial transportation industry will pay $538 million in carbon pricing in 2021. By 2030, CTA estimates $3 billion in carbon pricing by 2030.

CTA said they continue to ask the federal government to allocate all revenues generated from the commercial industry sector towards a “green truck fund” to encourage more investment in greenhouse gas reducing equipment and technologies in industry.

From a story by Global News March 26, Alberta currently pays a federally imposed carbon tax levy set to increase from $40/tonne this year to $50/tonne next year. Global said the levy will collect more than $2 billion in annual revenue by 2022, revenue of which 90 per cent is rebated to Albertans and the rest utilized for green projects.

CTA encourages all trucking companies in Canada to continue to discuss carbon pricing with their customers, and AMTA encourages industry to remain informed on the subject.
