Column: CVE merges with Sheriff Traffic Operations to form Sheriff Highway Patrol

Submitted by Sheriff Highway Patrol

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement merged with Sheriff Traffic Operations to form the new Sheriff Highway Patrol (SHP) unit, which is part of the Sheriffs Branch. The public will notice a change in shoulder flashes on officers’ uniforms from “Commercial Vehicle Enforcement” to “Sheriff” and vehicle decals are being updated.

While the future may bring more changes for this new unit, CVSA-certified officers still operate vehicle inspection stations across the province and conduct commercial vehicle inspections.

Staying Safe During COVID-19

Like transport drivers, Sheriff Highway Patrol members remain committed front line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. While Sheriffs have reduced contact with members of the public where possible, they continue to ensure safety for all highway users by focusing inspections on unsafe commercial vehicles.

It is also important officers and drivers feel safe during their interactions; Sheriffs have been supplied PPE and the AMTA provided free PPE kits for drivers at certain vehicle inspection stations across the province.

Violations found

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and the following are examples of violations Sheriff High Patrol members found during vehicle inspections over the past few months:

Broken torque rod/stabilizer bolts resulting in a shifted axle

Crack in sliding subframe

Broken drive shaft

Same Dispute Resolution Process Between SHP and Commercial Carriers

The dispute resolution process for inspection report violations remains the same under Sheriff Highway Patrol, though the document has been updated to reflect its name change:

Reminder: Traffic Safety Enforcement Focus for August and September

August: New Drivers and Distracted Drivers – $300 fine and three demerits for distracted drivers

September: Back to School – $567 fine and six demerits for passing a school bus with flashing red lights
