Newly amalgamated Sheriff Highway Patrol continues to meet its mandate

The recently named Sheriff Highway Patrol (SHP) continues to work hard to remove unsafe commercial vehicles and drivers off our provincial highways. COVID may have changed how we do business but it hasn’t stopped us from meeting our mandate. In 2020, SHP has already completed over 27,000 CVSA Roadside Inspections and removed over 10,000 commercial vehicles from the highway.

Staying safe during COVID-19

Sheriff Highway Patrol members remain committed as front line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. While Sheriffs have reduced contact with members of the public where possible their duties still require them to interact with the public on a daily basis. Unfortunately until recently, Our facilities have remained closed to the public to reduce the risk to transmitting COVID. We have since installed Sneeze Shields to help reduce the spread of COVID. Each facility will open back up to the public after each facility has completed the sneeze shield installation.

It is also important officers and drivers feel safe during their interactions; Sheriffs will continue to wear PPE as they interact with the motoring public.

Violations found

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and the following are examples of violations Sheriff High Patrol members found during CVSA Inspections over the past few months: bulging tire, unsecure cargo, loose wheel fasteners.

Reminder: Traffic Safety Enforcement focus for November and December

November: Occupant Restraint Month

You could face a $162 ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. In 2020, over 500 commercial drivers have already been ticketed for not wearing their seatbelts in Alberta.

December: Impaired Driving

Alberta, like all Canadian jurisdictions, has provincial sanctions that apply to impaired driving in addition to criminal penalties imposed by the courts under the Criminal Code of Canada. The Sheriff Highway Patrol Impaired Detection Unit (IDU) reminds you not to drink and drive.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement’s Facebook page will no longer be updated, please follow the Sheriffs Branch to stay informed of Sheriff Highway Patrol’s activities.
