Celebrating Alberta’s Growing Hydrogen Economy

October 2023, Edmonton, AB – last week, AMTA was thrilled to attend Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB’s State of the Province Hydrogen Luncheon to celebrate Alberta’s hydrogen economy, and it was an incredible event!

Our very own Terri Johnson, manager of Industry Advancement, spoke on AMTA’s actions in our province’s hydrogen economy and our collaboration with our incredible partners. All our initiatives and projects could not continue to move the needle on innovation without the involvement of many organizations.

One piece of the exciting hydrogen initiative is the launch of the first hydrogen fueling stations in Alberta with the Suncor Hydrogen Fueling Station in Edmonton. This project, as a part of AMTA’s Alberta Zero Emission Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC), is the first of its kind in Canada and is in partnership with Suncor Energy and Hydrogen Technology and Energy Corporation (HTEC) who are providing the development, equipment, and infrastructure required to support fueling operations of the hydrogen-fueled commercial trucks and busses. AMTA is proud to lead this exciting hydrogen project into fruition and leverage the most abundant element in the universe.
The fueling station in Edmonton is only the beginning of this work with AMTA’s partners, and the Calgary fuelling station is in the process to open soon. All to continue striving towards our clean emission goals and open the hydrogen highway through Alberta.

Another piece of the hydrogen puzzle is our incredible partners the City of Edmonton, and Strathcona County who jointly announced the launch of their two hydrogen busses into service starting the day after the event, on October 25th. Along with AMTA’s AZETEC vehicles, these busses will be using the Suncor hydrogen station for their fueling.

Lastly, we also want to give a special shout out to our funding partners Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

The transportation industry is one of the leading emitters of greenhouse gasses, and at the AMTA, we are striving to rectify this and make leaps and bounds towards helping the Government of Canada achieve its target of net zero emissions by 2050. As one of the principal industries driving Alberta’s economy, we are committed to environmental sustainability and pushing the trucking industry into a greener future with our various AZETEC projects and hydrogen innovations. We aren’t just setting the table for the future; this is happening now.

AMTA wants to give a huge thank you to all our partners. The support and partnership of each of your organizations are paramount in helping us advance towards a greener future of innovation in Alberta.
