Zero Emission Truck Testbed (ZETT)

AMTA, in partnership with Deloitte and Transport Canada, is leading the Zero Emission Truck Testbed (ZETT) project to deploy four zero-emission Class 8 trucks in real-world operations. Three hydrogen fuel cell trucks will operate in Alberta, while one battery electric truck will run a cross-border route between Surrey, BC and Mount Vernon, Washington.

The Zero Emission Truck Testbed Project

The on-road vehicle testing under ZETT began in December 2024 and will continue for 1-year to ensure the performance of each truck is tested in all seasons. This will allow us to:

  • Gather targeted data to address questions on the real-world performance of zero-emission trucks operating the in Canadian commercial transportation sector, looking at the impacts of factors such as weather, routes, maintenance causes and effects (downtime), and driver perspectives.

  • Involve the stakeholders who are developing the critical enforcement, regulatory and safety frameworks to support the safe rollout and operation of ZEVs in Canada.

  • Document and share the new knowledge gained through the testbed trials: results, lessons learned, experiences, training materials and best practices in safety.
