Trucking HR Canada Honours 104 Top Fleet Employers At Annual Awards Gala

OTTAWA, ON (October 17, 2024) — Trucking HR Canada brought national leaders together to celebrate the best employers in trucking and logistics at the annual Top Fleet Employers (TFE) awards gala in Toronto this evening. A total of 104 fleets earned TFE recognition, along with four Top Fleet awards and nine Achievements of Excellence.

This is the 11th year for the program honouring the best places to work in trucking and logistics in Canada and recognizing excellence in Human Resource practices in the sector.

“The TFE awards gala is the highlight of Trucking HR Canada's year, giving us a chance to come together and celebrate with the country’s top fleets,” says Angela Splinter, CEO, THRC. “The Top Fleet Employers program keeps growing every year, demonstrating the industry’s desire to continue reaching high standards of HR excellence in operations, champion best practices across the industry, and position the sector as a rewarding workplace.”

THRC recognizes four fleets each year as best in their class. This year’s Top Fleet award winners are:

  • Top Small: Classic Freight Transport

  • Top Medium: Polaris Transportation Group

  • Top Large: XTL Transport Inc.

  • Top Private Fleet Services: Walmart Fleet ULC

Nine firms received Achievement of Excellence Awards highlighting leadership in specific HR categories:

  • Employee Engagement: Steve's Livestock Transport

  • HR Innovator: Wellington Group of Companies

  • HR Leadership: Challenger Motor Freight

  • Training & Skills Development: Bison Transport

  • Community Engagement: XTL Transport Inc.

  • Women in the Workplace: Armour Transportation Systems

  • Workplace Culture: Parkland Corporation

  • Workplace Diversity & Inclusion: KAG Canada

  • Workplace Wellness & Mental Health: Rosenau Transport Ltd.

In a special presentation, Colleen Tesarski, HR Manager, People and Culture with Steve’s Livestock Transport (Manitoba) was recognized as HR Leader of the Year. This award celebrates a human resource professional who exemplifies human resources practices within their organization and is a role model to others. Tesarski was nominated by her peers for her innovation and contributions, including leveraging technology to transform recruiting, onboarding, and driver development; working with cross functional teams; and engaging her colleagues to implement transformative projects.

Past HR Leader of the Year recipients are: Dave Dietrich, The Erb Group (2023); Stacey Miller, RST Sunbury Transport (2022); Heather Mewhinney, Kriska Holdings Ltd. (2021);Rosana Preston, Rosedale Transport (2020); Denise McJannet, Caron Transportation Systems (2019); Geoff Topping, Challenger Motor Freight (2018); Brenda Cuthbert, Siemens Transportation Group Inc. (2017); and Ken Cross, SLH Transport Inc. (2016).

Special recognition was also given to employers who reached 10-year TFE milestones: Challenger Motor Freight, Edge Transportation Services Ltd., Liberty Linehaul Inc., Linamar Transportation Inc., Ryder Canada Supply Chain Solutions, and Triton Transport Ltd.

The TFE program is a national initiative that recognizes the significance of sound HR policies and practices in trucking and logistics. TFE is not a contest – fleets’ HR practices and initiatives are evaluated to ensure they meet a rigorous standard in multiple criteria. Feedback is also collected from employees, including drivers.

Trucking HR Canada encourages applications from fleets across Canada. Applications for the 2025 TFE program will open soon.

A special commemorative publication, “What Makes a TFE,” will be shared online in the coming days.
