Canadian Hydrogen Convention (Day 2)
On day two (April 27) of the Canadian Hydrogen Convention AMTA President Chris Nash announced the association’s partnership with Suncor for the Alberta Zero Emission Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC), among other projects.
Nash was joined on the Edmonton Global Stage by David Van Den Assem, (Senior Manager, Clean Technology and Climate Change Innovation, Alberta Innovates), and Grace Meikle, (Senior Business Partner, Alberta Innovates & Emissions Reduction Alberta).
Suncor will be providing fueling locations and site construction for the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Demonstration (EVID) program building a permanent hydrogen fueling station to support AZETEC as a key building block for the growth in hydrogen vehicles in Alberta – including transit and other commercial vehicles. Suncor is also providing financial contributions; in-kind salaries for engineering staff; project materials; hydrogen molecules for the entire project and more.
As well as AZETEC, Suncor will play a key role in expanding Alberta’s hydrogen ecosystem through AMTA initiatives with hydrogen vehicles. Partnerships like Suncor are key to establishing the building blocks necessary for the emerging hydrogen market in Alberta.
“Alberta has a lot to be proud of,” said Meikle. “There’s so much going on here.”
Sentiments echoed by Van Den Assem.
“It’s great to see things lift off from the ground level,” said Van Den Assem. “We’re building the new Alberta.”
Nash also joined a fireside chat panel on the Edmonton Global stage, joined by Marcel Pouliot (IQ, Jeff Grant (Zen Energy) and Daljit Bawa (Ballard). The panel was moderated by AMTA Manager, Research and Innovation, Amanda Mesluk and focused on Net Zero Mobility.
The convention was touted as the largest of its kind in North America with an attendance of about 4,000 people from 19 countries. An Edmonton Global press release said the event is expected to have a total economic impact of $3.5 million on the Edmonton Metropolitan Region including direct and induced benefits.
AMTA will next be sharing its programs and initiatives on Alberta’s hydrogen ecosystem and net zero mobility at the fourth annual International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Event May 25-26 in Edmonton.
