Alberta Fuel Tax Relief Returns October 1 The Government of Alberta will pause the provincial fuel tax from October 1 to December 31, 2026, as part of its Fuel Tax Relief Program. The relief applies to applicable gasoline and diesel fuels. Retailers are expected to reflect the reduction in fuel prices.

This special notice provides information on the fuel tax relief as announced by the Premier on September 22, 2026.
Fuel Tax Relief from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026
Effective 12:01 a.m. on October 1, 2026, the Government of Alberta will return to the Fuel Tax Relief Program and pause the collection of fuel tax to reduce the impact of high fuel prices on Albertans.
Under the Fuel Tax Relief Program, the provincial fuel tax is reduced or paused when the average price of oil is $80 per barrel or higher during a quarterly review period. The Government of Alberta will continue to review the provincial fuel tax rate each quarter based on oil prices. A future announcement will be made before the collection of fuel taxes resumes. When collection resumes, the fuel tax rate will not increase by more than nine cents per litre per quarter.
