New LCV Instructor Training

The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) has oversight over the Alberta Long Combination Vehicle Driver Training Program and those who deliver it. Successful completion of the Long Combination Vehicle Instructor Training Program will enable applicants to become AMTA-certified Long Combination Vehicle Instructors.

Prerequisites:

LCV drivers who wish to become LCV instructors must meet the following requirements and provide supporting documentation:

  • Valid Class 1 license
  • 36 months LCV experience (provide a confirmation letter from employer)
  • PDIC certificate (within the previous 48 months)
  • Provincial trucking association LCV driver’s certificate
  • Carrier issued driver certificate (wallet card)
  • Commercial Driver’s Abstract (within 30 days of enrolment)

They must also include at least one of the following and attach a copy of the LCV Carrier Permit:

  • Driver of a carrier operating with a valid LCV operating permit
  • Safety supervisor of a carrier operating with a valid LCV operating permit
  • Employee of a driving school approved to deliver LCV driver training

Delivery Format

Delivery time: Two days (minimum 14 hours)

This is a two-day course, during which instructor candidates will learn the LCV program and demonstrate the ability to instruct both in-class and in a practical environment with LCV equipment.

Instructor led virtual classroom: Join other course participants in training from one of AMTA’s instructors from the comfort of your home or office.  Instructor led virtual classroom courses are delivered through the Teams app. After the classroom sessions, instructor candidates will be required to shoot a video of themselves performing a couple and uncouple of an LCV set, as though they were instructing a student. It is recommended that an assistant is used for shooting the video.

Existing LCV Instructors:

AMTA-certified LCV Instructors must teach a minimum of one LCV course per year and take an LCV Instructor Recertification course every three years.

  • Safety supervisor of a carrier operating with a valid LCV operating permit
