July 04, 2023, Calgary, AB – In April 2023, AMTA and Nikola Motor Corp. jointly announced the purchase of a Nikola Class-8 commercial vehicle, and it is now ready to hit the road in the hands of commercial carriers across the province.

AMTA’s Nikola Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), in partnership with Bison Transport, is part of AMTA’s Hydrogen Commercial Vehicle Demonstrations project, the first of its kind in Canada. Through this program, Alberta-based commercial carriers will have the opportunity to test these heavy-duty commercial vehicles that operate with alternative, energy-efficient fuels within their day-to-day business operations and in true road and weather conditions within Alberta.

“We are excited to put this truck to work in Alberta and begin collecting performance data and raising awareness about this advanced technology,” says Doug Paisley, AMTA board chair. “Promoting early adoption helps boost industry confidence in such innovative technology. Working closely with our members, stakeholders, and partners, AMTA is a leader in helping Canada reach its 2050 net-zero goals and supports the widespread adoption of zero-emissions commercial vehicles.”

Over the course of the next two years, carriers across the province can become accustomed to and train their drivers on alternative-fueled trucks and support the widespread adoption of zero-emission commercial vehicles. In addition, AMTA will collect data that will be used to support recommendations to the industry and government on the continued use of these vehicles.

Bison Transport is proud to partner with the AMTA in the deployment of the zero-emission Nikola Battery Electric Vehicle in our Calgary operations,” says Mike Gomes, vice-president, Maintenance, with Bison Transport. “Bison Transport remains committed to testing and implementing technology, as well as operating practices, that enhance efficiency. This vehicle deployment is a large step towards understanding the operating characteristics of a zero-emission vehicle in day-to-day operations.
