Stavely collision a devastating loss

Feb 3, 2026 | News Releases

The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) members, staff and board extend their heartfelt condolences following the fatal collision involving junior hockey players outside of Stavely, Alberta.

“This is a devastating loss,” said Tim Bennett, Chair of the AMTA Board of Directors. “Hockey is part of the fabric of communities across North America. When young people on their way to practice do not come home, the grief reaches far beyond their home rink. Our thoughts are with the families, coaches, teammates and communities mourning this tragedy.”

“Moments like this remind us how connected we all are on Alberta’s highways,” said Robert Harper, president of the Alberta Motor Transport Association. “Everyone who uses the road shares a responsibility to look out for one another.”

“At this stage, it will take time for all the facts surrounding this incident to be confirmed,” Bennett said. “Out of respect for those affected and for the investigative process, AMTA will not speculate or comment on potential causes or implications until more information is available.”

Harper said Alberta’s commercial transportation sector is grounded in a strong safety culture that recognizes the weight of that responsibility, especially when lives are lost. “Professional drivers understand that the road is not just infrastructure, it’s how people, goods and communities stay connected. This loss reinforces why training and a shared commitment to road safety matter so deeply.”

“Our hearts are with everyone affected,” Harper said. “We join Albertans across the province in mourning and send our deepest sympathies to the families and communities of the young men whose lives were tragically lost.”
