Today, the Alberta Government announced temporary modifications to regulations for commercial drivers and railway operators during the COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement was made in order to ensure the province’s supply chain continues necessary delivery of goods such as medical supplies and groceries.

The commercial transportation industry has a long history of moving products during public health disasters and this pandemic is no different. Critical items Albertans depend on such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, PPE and food, it all comes on a truck.  Trucking is one of the last and most crucial links in the supply chain and it is an essential service.

Changes announced by Transportation Minister Ric McIver include flexibility on hours of service; increased weight limits on loads some vehicles can carry, road ban exemptions and municipal bylaw exemptions.

The AMTA is working closely with government to ensure safety remains priority while addressing the pending and ongoing need for supply of essential goods.

As always, driver safety is our number one priority and together with carriers, shippers and receivers, we will all continue to do our part to maintain social distancing, practice good hygiene and work safely.

The AMTA remains in regular communication with our carriers, government and industry stakeholders in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic regarding transportation issues and the importance of keeping the supply chain safe and open for business.

Stay healthy, stay distant and stay safe!

Chris Nash,

AMTA President
