On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, a visitor reported one bighorn sheep ram’s carcass found near Jasper Lake in Jasper National Park. The head had been removed. Parks Canada responded and discovered a second ram’s carcass in the vicinity, also without its head. The area was closed in October for public safety.

A poaching offence likely occurred between the hours of 4 pm on October 16 and 10 am on October 17. Parks Canada’s Law Enforcement Branch is asking for the public’s help in providing information about this incident that could lead to the identification of those responsible. Please contact Park Wardens if you have any of the following:

  • Dash camera footage from Jasper Lake, Edna’s Knoll or Talbot Lake areas
    during this time;
  • Information on suspicious persons or vehicles in this area and timeframe; or
  • Any information regarding two recently removed bighorn ram heads or horns

Poaching is a serious offence under the Canada National Parks Act. Park Wardens have initiated an investigation and may pursue charges. Public information is a key component of investigations.
