Brain Injury Awareness Month is here this June
June is Brain Injury Awareness Month, an important time to highlight a serious and often invisible threat facing Alberta’s transportation workforce.
Brain injuries can have lasting impacts on memory, mobility, and mental health and data shows they remain a significant risk in the commercial trucking sector. Falls, collisions, and winter conditions are leading causes, with concussions being the most common injury.
Between 2019 and 2024, workplace brain injuries in the industry cost between $647,000 and $1.57 million annually. These numbers reinforce the need for proactive safety measures, from fatigue management to fall prevention.
Read more on why this issue matters to our industry and what we can do to help protect Alberta’s drivers.
June is Commercial Safety Month
June is Commercial Vehicle Safety Month — a reminder of the critical role commercial vehicles play in Alberta and the shared responsibility we all have to keep our roads safe.
Commercial vehicles are larger, heavier, and operate differently than passenger cars, which means they require extra attention on the road. In 2023, commercial vehicles were involved in 7.2% of all fatal collisions in Alberta, despite only making up 3% of vehicles in casualty collisions.
Driver fatigue and close following distance remain two of the most preventable risk factors — and both can be addressed through awareness and defensive driving.
Let’s work together to make Alberta’s roads safer this June and beyond.

Green Freight Program – Commercial Carriers Funding Program to Support Sustainable Efforts
Organizations across Alberta’s commercial transportation sector are working to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. The Green Freight Program supports these efforts through funding for fleet assessments, equipment retrofits, vehicle repowers, and the adoption of low-carbon vehicles.
Stream 1 offers up to $250,000 annually for third-party fleet energy assessments and approved truck and trailer retrofits. Stream 2 provides cost-shared contributions for projects such as repowering vehicles, purchasing low-carbon alternatives, and implementing fuel-efficient logistical practices.
AMTA supports carriers through initiatives like the AZETEC hydrogen truck project and partnerships with experts such as GreenerFleets, which has helped over 100 fleets complete energy assessments under the program. The Green Freight Program helps Canadian fleets take measurable steps toward sustainability—reducing emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and futureproofing operations.
Providing Fleets with the Data They Need to Explore Alternative Fuels
For nearly 150 years, there has been a focused effort to design, develop, and commercialize automobiles, their engines, and ultimately the fuel sources they utilize. From three-wheeled automobiles in 1886 to the four-, six-, 10-, and 14-wheeled power units we see today.
The evolution of these vehicles follows a particular pattern, like most products or services that had to undergo a rigorous process to be commercialized.
